Created for the students of Nottingham University to hang out and socialise in between the serious stuff of studying, this four container build is a great example of innovative upcycling as a solution to communities out-growing their existing spaces.

Upcycling with shipping containers

Finding precious space and funds for new buildings is no easy task in this day and age, which is why there's been a boom in upcycled building projects. These are low-cost, use recycled materials wherever possible, and leave a low carbon-footprint. This case study shows an upcycling solution to accommodation shortage at its best – recycled shipping containers that take up minimum ground space with the addition of a roof terrace and sited in reclaimed car park space. Shipping containers are also a great structure for other recycled buildings - from portable offices and classrooms, to mobile catering units, portable garages and workshops. Joining up shipping containers

This grand design is based around 4 x 35ft recycled shipping containers joined together to create a wide internal space. The internal walls were removed, the apertures reinforced and the completed structure joined together externally on-site, complete with external staircases leading to a roof terrace.
