Container conversions cover anything from a having a lock box fitted, a new door or ply lining, to a full scale repurposing into an office, garage, pop-up food stall, and everything in between. Find out more about the most common options offered to enhance or transform a shipping container that gives you exactly what you need.
Shipping containers are so versatile, that the possibilities for modifications are vast. The basic structure of a strong, secure, long-lasting metal box lends itself well to a wide range of applications from safe, dry storage to transformation into a "new" building. The cost of these conversions range from around £50 to have a lock box fitted to secure the doors by protecting your padlock, a few hundred to spruce your container up with a repaint or fit an easy-opening door, to thousands to convert a shipping container into a something that is almost unrecognisable as a shipping container!
The costs of converting a container simplified
With so many variables involved in container conversions, including the changeable nature of the materials market and the endless combinations of modifications to choose from, it's impossible to quote exact figures. Planning your container conversion is a bit like choosing from the menu in a restaurant - you pick the stuff you want, and final bill will vary from person to person - or in this case, from conversion to conversion. But there are some variables in the initial planning stage that will dictate the basis costs:New or used container? This is the first decision to make before work gets started, and everything else will be added up from there. Both options are equally popular. Used containers are obviously easier on the budget and can still give you 10-15yrs of solid use. Cosmetic damage from age can be improved with a repaint, or external wood cladding if appropriate and your budget allows. All our used shipping containers are guaranteed water-tight and structurally sound, so make sure if you buy elsewhere or are planning a DIY job, that a second hand container is fit for purpose. New containers are in great condition and will give you more years of trouble-free use.
Size If you're planning a small single conversion the cost can be kept lower than you think. For example a used 10ft or 15ft portable office from Containers Direct, with a basic package of office features, currently comes in at under £6,000. Our full-scale, large conversions can be as large as 40ft, or beyond in the case of joined-up containers or extra-wide new builds. 20ft shipping containers represent best value for money and are popular as a good mid-range size.
