Occasionally a client will approach us with a request for renovation or conversion work to their existing container. We collect the container and bring it in to our workshops to carry out the required work. This job was a very special job, as the container belongs to an Olympic medalist! Omar Haddad won a total of five gold medals at the Special Olympics World Games in Athens, 2011. Here he is, pictured above, carrying the 2012 Olympic torch he carried, outside the newly restored container - we were honoured and inspired by his visit, and hope he continues in his great success.

Renovation and conversion work carried out

  • Repairs to leaking roof with 3 welded patches

  • Fabricate and fit a sloping roof

  • Ply line and insulate

  • Fit 18mm ply floor

  • Remove exterior rust and repaint container

The original container

This is a storage container, not a shipping container, therefore the dimensions are an unconventional 14ft x 8ft x 7ft.

Fixing the holes

The holes in the roof that had appeared over time were mended by welding three steel patches over the affected areas. See before and after below:

Fabricating the sloping roof

To prevent any further deterioration to the roof, we created a sloping roof structure, to allow rainwater to run off it. A sloping roof also makes the container more aesthetically pleasing when sited in the garden, as this one is. First we made a timber frame, and covered this with corrugated steel, powder coated panels. We filled the sides with barge boards, after which we repainted the whole container to match.

Ply lining and insulation

Using 9mm redwood over 100mm rockwool, we ply lined and insulated the inside of the container, and fitted a new floor using 18mm ply wood. For more on ply lining and insulation, see our article Ply Lined Containers
