This conversion is one of thirteen separate units commissioned by TW Power Ltd, a biomass energy systems provider. The containers will be used to house boilers generating power from wood pellets.

Design

A tunnel-tainer is a container with doors at both ends, which means that when both doors are opened, a tunnel is created. This conversion creates a tunnel by adding an additional set of flat panel S1 doors at the opposite end to the original ISO doors.

The CAD

Replacing end wall with new doors

Removing existing wall

We cut this off to leave an aperture for the new set of doors. We make sure we make the cut behind the container corner castings (shown left), as these units will be double stacked on site, and the corner castings are the structural element allowing containers to be connected, and lifted securely.

Making the doors

We then make a brand new S1 set of doors in our workshop, which can then be fitted to the newly created end opening. S1 doors are made from flat steel panels, and can are easier to used than traditional shipping container doors, due to the reduced bulk.

Repainting

The container is being repainted white, which means we need to do this in three stages, in order to cover the original much deeper colour. First we dust the container with a grey primer, and then paint over with two coats of white.

Step 1 - primed

Step 2 - first coat

Step 3 - final coat
