CONTAINER SAVES THE DAY FOR THORNTON LE DALE CHIRSTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON
Friday 30 November 2018 Filed in: General
The future of Christmas cheer looked bleak for the village of Thornton le Dale, North Yorkshire, when their annual community Christmas lights display and switch-on event came under threat. After 27 years of holding this magical event, they lost the use of the two donated containers in which they stored all their event equipment.
As with all good Christmas stories, there is a happy ending. Thanks to community fundraising efforts, including an award from the Big Lottery Fund and a grant from the local council, Thornton le Dale were able secure funding for a new storage container and planning permission with a ten year lease. Part or the press release announcing their success tells more of the story behind the container featured here:
"During 2017, Containers Direct developed the concept of a specially adapted, portable, wooden clad "lean to" style storage structure, suitable for Conservation Areas and National Parks. Help and advice from the North York Moors National Park Planning Authority ensured that the specification was suitable to be sited in a central location within the village. Our subsequent planning Application was approved, and a 10 year lease was granted.
The specially adapted portable storage unit will be delivered in July, and lifted over the 3m high, grade II listed, Heritage car park wall, into position by special crane. We plan to have the new 300sqft storage facility ready by November this year to enable equipment from this year's Switch-On Event and lights display to be dismantled straight into the new storage facility.
The future of the Thornton le Dale Christmas Lights is now much brighter. The 27 year old tradition of community volunteers providing Christmas Lights for the enjoyment and benefit of residents and local businesses now has a new lease of life."
