Joining Up Shipping Containers

Monday 11 January 2021 Filed in: General

If you're thinking about a shipping container conversion but need something bigger than a standard 8ft wide container offers, then look no further – Containers Direct have expertly designed and practiced a method of joining up shipping containers to give you widths of 16ft, 24ft, 32ft and beyond.

The method for joining up shipping containers

Using as many containers you may need to reach your desired width, we remove the long sides of the containers and reinforce the apertures. For containers 20ft in length we can do this by using box section steel around the aperture. For longer containers, for example 40ft, we need to create a supporting post in the middle of the container, again reinforced with box section steel. This prevents the roof dropping down because we have removed the wall. Once we have completed any other requested conversion work your containers will be delivered and positioned next to each other ready for joining and sealing. We provide a full set of detailed instructions to our clients to carry out this simple step*.

*Upon request we can complete this stage for you - POA.

Examples of joined up shipping containers

The process of joining up shipping containers is most commonly used for provide extra wide garages, offices, classrooms and workshops. All these applications often require extra width, given that the standard shipping container width is only 8ft.

Take a look at some of our favourite conversions using joined up containers, including our work using four shipping containers to create a width of 32ft, to our two container conversions creating a 16ft width.

Bespoke widths

Using standard shipping containers means that we can only supply widths in increments of 8ft. For bespoke widths we can build brand new containers in our workshops, up to a width of 12ft. Beyond 12ft and transportation of the unit becomes an issue, so we can also join new builds together if you require a unit wider than this. For example, we created a 20ft wide garage container by joining up two new build 10ft containers. Let us know what size you need and we can build it! Also popular for garages are our single unit 10ft wide new build CarTainers. This product gives you the extra space needed to park your car in a container and comfortably exit it.
