Top Five Picks of Shipping Container Customisations

Thursday 28 January 2021 Filed in: General

Containers Direct offer a wide range of customisations and optional extras with all shipping containers. They can improve the function, appearance and extend the life of the container, especially if you are buying used. All customisation work is carried out in our own workshops by highly skilled tradesmen, to give you unbeatable quality.

Here are our top five most requested customisations:

Repainting

This is an essential for used containers, which will have a fair amount of cosmetic damage on them – scuffs, scrapes, rust patches and dents. While this is normal for used shipping containers and doesn't affect their performance, most people want their containers to look nice too. We use rubberised marine paint which extends the life of your container by providing an extra layer of protection. There's a wide variety of colours to choose from, and the good news is that we do this free for all used containers under 20ft! For other containers price will be based on size.

Ply Lining

This is the only 100% effective solution to deal with condensation in shipping containers. Behind the ply lining we pack Rockwool insulation, and this combination keeps the container at a consistent temperature which prevents condensation forming. This is particularly important if you are storing goods in your container that are susceptible to moisture damage, or your container is being converted into a unit for occupation, such as an office. Ply lining also provides sound insulation, which is good for containers that are being converted into workshops, offices or classrooms. Ply lining also gives your container a smart appearance on the inside – much more aesthetically pleasing than cold metal walls!

Grafotherm

While it doesn't provide complete protection against condensation, is it a cheaper way to help tackle its worst effects. Grafotherm is sprayed onto the ceiling of the container where it acts like a sponge to absorb moisture as it forms. This can be enough protection for a lot of types of stored goods, and will save you the costs of a full ply lining fit out. If you are unsure what the best level of condensation protection for your circumstances is, we can advise you.

Electrics

A power supply to your shipping container is always possible. Even if you're using your container as a simple storage unit it can be handy to have a light in there. For many conversion projects a power supply is essential, giving you not only light but power sockets and even heating. All wiring is surface mounted in plastic conduit, without drilling directly into the container walls - we don't leave any holes there! If you are having your container ply lined we fit directly onto the ply, otherwise we weld steel strips onto the walls to mount the fittings. Connection is via a consumer unit and external hook up.

Cladding

Shipping containers can look magnificent with exterior wood cladding. A metal box is transformed into something resembling a wood cabin, which in some cases can help with planning permission. We have a range of woods to choose from, to suit different budgets, from basic Rustic to the luxurious looks of Siberian Larch and White Spruce. Back gardens, fields and rural locations are homes to many of our cladded containers.

These are just some of the most popular customisations we carry out at Containers Direct.
